"Destroy and Reconstruct"

The Process

I started just by cutting the compositions into pieces with my rotary cutter, I tried to make the pieces with curved edges but I cut them randomly  because I still wasn't completely sure what my finished product would be. Once the pieces were all cut I began fitting pieces together and sewing them with my sewing machine. I realized that most of my pieces would have to overlap as opposed to fitting together perfectly since overlapping them gave them more support and durability. I started by doing each petal separately, then I'd sew them all together and start with the next layer of petals. Once I got all four of my layers sewn together I bent the petals up to give the flower a more three demential feel. 

The Finished Product

I definitely enjoyed the destruction and reconstruction of the compositions more than I actually enjoyed creating the original pieces. I am a big fan of sewing so I took advantage of the openness of the project guidelines and brought this project to my sewing machine. I loved this project and hope I can do more things like it in the future. 

Jett McCreary - Project 3

Reflection:

                 I didn't really have a process. I just started to rip each composition into a 100 pieces each. First I dumped out the pieces on the table and flipped them all face up. Then I started to arrange the pieces together that looked like they fit together like a puzzle. Once they were arranged, I pushed them closer together, some started to overlap. After I thought the size was more appropriate, I took packing tape and taped everything to the table. Once everything was taped to the table I pried it up off the table I folded the ends over towards the back. After that I decided to tape down the back because it was sticking to everything and vice versa. I think it kind of looks like a place mat, but it does some pretty cool looking stuff in the sunlight. It reminds me of sparkling gems under a bright light. The tape also makes the piece very flexible and dynamic, its basically waterproof now.

Reflection: When this project was first announced I was very excited, which seemed to be a different outlook from the rest of the class. I've gotten use to not being attached to my art, so it wasn't heartbreaking to destroy these pieces. My first instinct for this project was to do something that dealt with the female body and femininity, because it is something that I am passionate about. My process was sort of random, I started out by creating a torso/chest and arms from one of my previous compositions, and then I created a head. The only thing I really planned out before starting to glue was the face, because well, I wanted it to be recognizable as a face. Everything else, I cut random pieces and glued them to where they fit, sort of like a puzzle. I didn't want to think too much about what I was doing, because I wanted the finished work to look somewhat messy and abstract, like it was done in the spur of the moment. The music I was listening to while working on this piece also influenced what I created, two songs in general which were: "I'm Not Waiting" by Sleater-Kinney and "That Battle Is Over" by Jenny Hval. (You should listen to them, they're pretty good) For this piece I also wanted the viewers to be able to tell what it was (a human) but for it not to look completely normal (the droopy eye, weird colors, weird shapes, etc). I had a lot of fun doing this piece, and overall I enjoyed this project. It wasn't something that I could ever imagine doing in a high school art class, so it was a new experience.   

Project 3

                                                                         Reflection:
At first when i was told about the project i had no idea what to do with it. I have worked with paper before and i made a lot of paper sculptures in previous design classes. I decided to make a 3D paper sculpture using only the diptych and some wire. I chose wire because it it easy to work with and it gives you a cool effect. It also holds good and doesn't need extra material to make it hold together. I made a paper sculpture of an abstract form. I wanted the focal point to be a spiral shape that seems as if it was going in and out of the triangle boxes. I also considered keeping the overall shapes in my composition geometric and left only the spiral shape organic. Before i finished the project i noticed that there was too much going on in one corner in comparison to the other so i added the two overlapping cubes to make it more balanced. I enjoyed working with the project and was happy to see how it turned out , it kind of reminds me of a rollercoaster , and the vibrant colors make it stand out too.It has a very nice illusion to it and is visually appealing ,  actually like it more than before it was cut up.

Project 4 & 5 By Feza Ali

I found project 5 much easier than project 4. It was an interesting project, at first I started with a different theme where I was using colorful objects, but then changed it to interesting aspects of architect. I took a trip to the DIA and managed to get pictures of interesting aspects of the art work there and their infrastructure. Their marble stairs and the beautiful gold doors were some interesting aspects that I got to capture. I focused a lot on detail, such as the design in a window or the archway of the door, instead of using pictures of the whole area. I used whatever aspect interested me.

Project 4 was a little difficult to understand at first. I was again confused as to what the turnout would be. I'm not really new to Photoshop, but neither am I an expert. The steps provided made it easier for met to make these. The color I chose were both completely random, but both ended up being pastel. The top pictures was derived from a bucket of color pencils while the second one was from a print of a pillow case. I had fun because I got to play around with different ways I wanted the patterns to look like. My favorite one is the second one because it looks like something you would see in kaleidoscope.

For Project 4, I didn't find it very difficult to do. I knew PhotoShop pretty well from taking photography classes in high school but I did find illustrator a bit difficult because I have never used that program but I caught on pretty easily. The inspiration I used was buildings for these compositions. I used the Old Main building for these compositions by taking a few pics from different angles to make both unique in its own way. For the first image. I outlined it how it was and I chose purple to fill it in with because it's my favorite color and thought it would look good and made it where each image was like a reflection to the other image because I thought it would look really cool. The second image I just outline the building and I sort of made this composition more like a checkerboard pattern. I filled in every other with a light blue and made the outline a darker blue and the rest filled with a darker blue and outlined with a lighter blue to give it a really cool effect. Overall I think these compositions turned out pretty good.

For Project 5, I found it really easy to go out and take the pictures. It was easy finding things to take pictures of.  For all of my pictures I took pictures of things in nature and things you would find in the outside world but mostly buildings because I'm not that big of taking pictures inside places but I like inside pictures it just depends what's on the inside for me. I took pictures of things that I thought looked pretty and that would look really cool how I took the picture. Honestly I really enjoyed doing this project because it was fun getting to go out and take pictures because I really enjoy photography.



 

 

 

Project 4 + 5

Reflection

     This was my first time using Photoshop in a very long time and my first time using Illustrator, so it took me sometime to get used to them and figure out how to work the programs. Most of my pictures came from when I was just walking around the campus or sitting in class. Overall the project's were hard for me because I had to actually go places and find take pictures, which I didn't want to do as I've been sick lately. I became very overwhelmed with the three projects and trying to get everything done between them, other classes, and my job.
