PROJECT #1: JUAN PABLO TORRES

PROJECT 1 REFLECTION

From the start, i was lost on what i was even doing, my inspirations were mostly ancient Egyptian sources, and a few random images i found interesting. First few i found from an ancient inventions book a classmate let me borrow, the rest i found on the online library. I tried to give a crazy look to them since what I'm mostly inspired by is psychedelic work. Overall i thought this was an interesting project, i enjoy creating abstract art, but never had i thought of implementing several different principles or even putting a book together out of drawings. I was confused on what i was doing but as i progressed with some of the sketches i started getting more motivated which later sparked some creativity in me. I wanted to have plenty detail, and give them a trippy tone. I feel like i accomplished my goal for the most part. It was definitely a challenge because from the beginning i was procrastinating and was out of orbit with my compositions. To start with, i had less than 25, i later had to come up with different designs, same went with my sketches, i just kept creating in search of finding what i was looking for. This project really tested my time management skills which i lacked, definitely lost sleep due to it, I'd say i did them in about 2 rushed nights, which proves that i need to stay more focused for future projects. In conclusion I'm content with what i achieved, and felt like it has pushed me to other levels of creativity as well.

blog post 1 McCreary

My source material was a Pokémon book about the recently released Pokémon go app. The traces went pretty smoothly, but at one point I did run out of big enough things to trace out of the book. I ended up swapping with someone and tracing sculptures from late china. The sketches went great, but I honestly didn't like most of them in the pencil. I was a little unsure about blowing up the pictures because I wasn't sure how they'd look especially since I didn't like how the sketches came out on a lot of them. Before this project, I've never used a pitt pen, so that was a new experience. I honestly couldn't believe how much it made the drawings pop off the paper. My greatest challenges were to not be super picky, as sometimes I can be a bit of a perfectionist; time management and to not use such a heavy hand, that's kind of my style so it was hard to stop myself. In high school, I remember getting a project where we had to take an everyday item and making into a repeating artwork which is what I kept thinking back to as an inspiration, as many of my sketches follow the flip flopping, repeating pattern.

Project 1: Abstract (Feza Ali)

When I first saw the project assignment I had no idea what it was going to end up like, and was actually slightly confused. Finding objects and images I liked to trace was one of the many obstacles I faced during the project which was mostly because I didn't know what we were going to end up doing them. Using the tracing and making abstracts was the fun part, it let me get much more creative since I wasn't just limited to finding other images. I was able to add more to it than what I traced. The next obstacle I faced was upsizing the image. It was a very tedious process, but the end results were great. Especially after tracing the images with black ink, it gave the drawing a whole new look and I loved it. I admit there are some images that I'm not so fond of, but the rest I loved. I enjoyed how they turned out.

Project 1 Comoplete : Kristal Michal-Brasseur

Reflections on Project 1
By: Kristal Michal-Brasseur
Initially when I started this project I had no idea what to expect. Honestly, it really wasn't really until the end that I finally did understand the project or even actually enjoy it. Yet as I stand sit here typing this blog post, I can't help but feel pride in my end result. This has to be one of the most tedious pieces of art I have ever done. I have never really experimented with design other than 2d drawings or paintings so i was worried this class wasn't going to be a challenge. I was very wrong. I never before realized how clumsy I am with my materials or how little attention I truly paid to details. It wasn't until I found myself shredding madly  through paper trying to get correct measurements that I realized I need to slow down and be more patient. Another moment was when I was actually assembling the project, never before had my patience for a piece been so tested as the glue would seem to NEVER stick. Yet it is those moments that I thought I was on the brink on insanity that make me proud of this project. Though in the beginning I admittedly had no concept or message in mind, except to make it look "weird". It was towards when I stopped trying so hard and let my creativity flow naturally that I understood what my art was about. I composed composition that seems to scream my personality without even realizing it (more so towards the end of the project). I like to think each slide is an individual look into a different part of my brain. The viewer can also see my progression from being artistically reserved to finally allowing my creativity to take control. Ultimately, I think the project was a great one to start with for the year because it really did challenge me, not only did it challenge my time management skills but also my artistic skills. Its been awhile since i had an art professor actually show me news ways using new material to create pieces. I had never really used carbon transfer paper before or ever thought about scaling up my pieces from a smaller size using a grid. I really enjoyed that aspect of this class. Down below is pictures of my full project, as well as some of my original concept designs and resources. Note that not all my original designs stayed the same as they were later changed in the process after understanding what I wanted the concept of this piece to be.

Project 1 - Julian Chastang

I started the project looking for inspiration in many of the books and magazines i had in my room. The books I decided to use for my project were Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing: Design and Invention, Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy, Graffiti: New York, and Graffiti: Las Angeles. It was a bit difficult to choose these out of other stuff i had since I couldn't use most of them due to not having the required pictures for the project. This was especially hard because I never really created anything abstract before.

What i ended up doing was using several images out of the figure drawing and anatomy books and trying to make the traced images look warped and not normal. I had several other images I got from old car magazines, but I felt like couldn't really use those because of their size. I ended up only using two images from the graffiti books, but I split one image into two. I thought this would be interesting because they look lithe they are separate images. This was an interesting but difficult assignment for me. If I could make any changes to my final images, I probably would have put more details into the images but then again I probably would have chosen simpler pictures to trace.

Non-objective Project - Calla Mudge

My inspirations for this project was Las Vegas and Eastern Europe, I got my source materials either from off of online or from old books from the 70's/80's. I didn't have many sources and many of my compositions are multiple tracings layered on top of each other. Overall I think the end result turned out alright and I'm happy with most of the pieces. Putting them all together in the book was the most challenging part for me. Out of all of them I think the first, third, and seventh pieces are my favorites. If I had the chance I would have collected more tracings and more ideas for patterns to use. In the end I enjoyed this project and liked to see how everyone's turned out and how each person showed through a bit in their work. Thank you to everyone on their helpful advice on how to finish my compositions.
